Alterations Workshop

Unwearable clothes due to needing repair or alterations? Grab that pile, bag them up and bring them to the Alterations Workshop!

Bring items (clothes, home decor, bags & more) from home that need light to medium repair or altering and the instructor will guide you through the process. Smaller projects may be completed while items in need of more work may need to be finished at home. For items that cannot be completed in the time allotted, your instructor can send you home with a plan to finish.

In addition to the guidance of your instructor, you will have access to all of our studio tools including sewing machines, a serger, hand sewing tools, cutting tools and more. We will also provide commonly used materials in mending such as interfacing, basic colors of thread, and bias tape. You will also have access to our bin of scrap fabric although we cannot guarantee availability of specific fabrics.

What you will need to bring: Any additional replacement items like buttons, zippers or extra fabric for patching. We also recommend that you bring a spool of thread in a color that matches your item (we have black, white and other basic colors).

If you are doing a project that you believe will require machine stitching, you must already know how to use a machine. We will not be teaching machine basics.

Examples of suitable projects:

Missing buttons & broken zippers

Shortening or lengthening

Torn or worn-through items

Taking in or letting out

Waistband adjustments

Basic fit alterations

If you are unsure of whether your project is suitable for this workshop, email Tricia at tricia@stitchmakersstudio.com. Unsuitable projects are those that involve considerable changes in silhouette and fit such as turning a wedding dress into a day dress or re-working a man’s suit. Leather items are also not able to be worked on since our studio uses home machines.

Participants must be over 16. Limit of 4 students per class.

Class Duration: 2.5 hours
